Two important management lessons I learnt from a 500 Naira note

Two important management lessons I learnt from a 500 Naira note by E. Ifeoma.

1. It happened some time ago but . I was in an audience listening to a motivational speaker. The speaker got out his wallet & pulled out a 500 Naira note. Holding it up, he asked, "Who wants this 500 naira note?"
Lots of hands went up. Including mine. A slow chorus began to build as people began to shout "Me!" "Me!" I began to wonder who the lucky one would be who the speaker would choose. And I also secretly wondered (and I am sure others did too ) why he would simply give away 500 naira. Even as the shouts of "I want it" grew louder, I noticed a young woman running down the aisle. She ran up onto the stage, went up to the speaker, and grabbed the five 500 naira note from his hand. "Well done, young lady," said the speaker into the microphone. The speaker simply say "Most of us just sit and wait for good things to happen. That's of no use. You've got to make things happen. Make a move" 'Simply thinking about doing something is of no use and not gud enough'. Our lives are like that. We all see opportunities around us. We all want the good things. But the problem is we don't take action. We all want the 500 naira notes on offer. But we don't make the move. We look at it longingly. Get up, and do something about it. Don't worry about what other people might think.
Take action.

2. later, the speaker got another 500 naira note and held it up for all to see, I thought I knew what's up. But he just asked a simple question. "How much is this worth?" "Five Hundred naira!" the crowd yelled in unison. "Right," said the speaker. He then took the note and crumpled it into a ball and asked "How much is it worth now?" "Five Hundred naira!" screamed the audience. He then threw the note on the ground, stamped all over it and picked up the note and asked one more time: "And how much is it worth now?" "Five Hundred naira!" was the response. "I want you to remember this," said the speaker. "Just because someone crumples it, or stamps on it, the value of the note does not diminish. We should all be like the 500 naira note. In our lives, there will be times when we feel crushed, stamped over, beaten. But never let your self-worth diminish. Just because someone chooses to crush you, that doesn't change your worth one bit!

Don't allow your self-worth to diminish because someone says something nasty or does something dirty to you."

Never let your self-worth diminish.

PRECAUTION is more powerful than EXPERTISE!

At the interview to fill the vacancy of a Field Engineer in a multinational oil company, two competent and qualified Engineers were shortlisted and the company was to decide on who to retain and who to show the red card.
They asked them If they could drive and they both answered in the affirmative even though only one of them could drive.
The Head of the Human Resources spearheading the interview
cum pruning session then handed his car keys to them to prove their driving skills within the premises.
The over-confident applicant collected the car key, opened the car, switched on the ignition, lighted it up, sped off, swirled, swerved and made some stunts on wheels before parking the car on the same spot to the seeming rousing applause and mischievously knowing smile of the interviewers.
The other applicant who could not drive collected the key all the
same, opened the car, opened the bonnet, checked the engine oil level, the brake fluid level, the gear oil level and the water in the radiator level.
As he closed the bonnet, the chief interviewer walked towards him and said: "Don't bother driving, you've just been hired!"
PRECAUTION is more powerful than EXPERTISE!
The race is not for the swiftest, but to the wise!
Don't be brash and over-confident.
Learn the ropes and never back off from giving your best even If you don't possess what it takes. That someone is doing it fast doesn't mean he is doing it right!
Direction is more important than speed! Exercise caution and take
precaution in the journey of life - that's how to be recruited into the employment of success.

21 Ways to Achieve Wealth and Success

It got me to think, How many people operate on autopilot and don’t stop to monitor their everyday patterns? Below I've summarized 19 of his habits for success (nine culled from his book and the next 10 from his recent article in Success) plus two of my own. If you're not actively engaged in these 21 things, you are, in effect, leaving money on the table.

1. Setting good daily habits.
Good habits are the foundation of wealth building. The difference between successful and unsuccessful people lies in their daily habits. Simply put, successful people have many good habits and few bad ones. If you understand that your bad habits may be preventing you from becoming wealthy, that realization will be the first step in your improving your circumstances.

In his book, Corley invites you to take out a sheet of paper and list your bad habits in one column and then invert each one to place under a new column for good habits. It should look like this:

Bad Habit/Good Habit

I watch too much TV.             I limit myself to one hour of TV per day.

I don’t remember names.     I write down names and remember them.

Then for 30 days, follow the guidance of your new good habits list. You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish.

2. Regularly creating goals.
Successful people are goal driven. They create goals all the time. They plan their day the night before with to-do lists.

People who are headed for success think for the long term. They have daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals. But what’s a goal without a plan to reach them? So not only do successful people have goals, they also come up with ways to achieve them and hold themselves accountable.

3. Engaging in self-improvement daily.
Successful people are always looking for ways to improve themselves. They read every day and are students of their profession. They don’t spend their time on activities that don't bring them closer to their goals.

I recently attended an event hosted by author Brendon Burchard, who said he consistently blocks out time to create. Successful people like Burchard know that time is too valuable a commodity to waste. They spend their time on the things that will move the needle for them in their business: Being committed to self-improvement means you engage in activities every day that will stretch you.

Seek ways to expand your knowledge. This won’t always be easy, but people grow from things that pose a challenge. Once your knowledge grows, opportunities appear.

4. Regularly taking care of personal health.
Each and every day successful people make an effort to eat right and exercise. Eating right is of utmost importance. Exercising daily can become a regular habit, just like taking a bath. People who exercise routinely have more energy to get things done. How are you doing in this area?

5. Often making time for relationship building.
People who are successful are other-people focused. They take time out of their day to strengthen the bonds of friendship and form long-lasting relationships with others. Networking is something they do all the time. They reach out to their contacts and look for ways to help them with no expectation of in return.

The most beautiful sound on Earth, I once heard someone say, is your name. So make it a goal to learn the names of every contact you meet. Aren’t you impressed when someone remembers your name? I know I am. So stand out as different and start remembering names.

6. Doing things in moderation.
You live in a balanced way if you do activities in moderation. This means having a balanced approach to work, eating, exercise, consuming alcohol, watching television, surfing the Internet and so forth. As a result, people will enjoy your company. If people like being around you, then you will be more apt to collaborate or find the new business partner that you need to take your business to the next level.

7. Getting things done.
Don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today: Accomplish things. All people have fears, but successful people push past them. They don't procrastinate. They get the important things done, no matter the cost.

In Rich Habits, Corley explains that when the thought of putting off something enters the mind, immediately shed notion by saying, “Do it now.” He says repeat these words 100 times if necessary. Just don’t stop till the task is done.

8. Keeping a positive outlook.
Consider the most successful person you know. Is that person positive or negative? Most likely this individual is positive, enthusiastic, energetic and happy. This person chooses to see the good in others and in himself or herself. To this person, problems are just opportunities waiting to be uncovered.

Every day people are bombarded by news of bad deeds and doings. Successful people minimize their exposure to this type of thing and instead opt to fill their minds with positive ideas from books and magazines.

9. Regularly saving money.
According to Corley, successful individuals put away about 10 percent to 20 percent of their gross earnings in a savings, investment or retirement plan. Not everyone can afford to do so, but what percent are you putting away?

Related: 8 Money Mistakes to Avoid on Your Way to Being Wealthy

10. Rejecting self-limiting thoughts.
Successful people command their thoughts and emotions. As soon as bad thoughts intrude, they cast out anything that challenges their ability to succeed at the task at hand. They do not dwell on negative notions. Their self-talk is positive and not overly critical. They replace bad thoughts with good ones.

Because successful people engage in self-improvement daily and are constantly involved in positive things, they don’t allow themselves time to indulge in negative emotions.

11. Living within means.
Wealthy people avoid overspending. Among many of those struggling financially, some are living above their means. They spend more than they earn, live from paycheck to paycheck and are drowning in credit-card debt. If this is you, resolve today to turn things around for you and your family.

12. Reading daily.
Many successful people read 30 minutes or more every day. Reading can increase your knowledge and know-how. When you read, often  you are seeking to improve yourself. This automatically sets you apart from your counterparts. You will stand out from the competition.

13. Limiting TV watching.
Did you know that many successful  people limit the amount their TV time to one hour or less a day? How much time do you lose in front of the television that you could be spending doing something more productive?

14. Doing more than what’s required.
Successful people regularly go above and beyond the call of duty at work. Even if something is not in their job description, they will volunteer to do it. Wealthy people make themselves invaluable. As an entrepreneur, you may not have a boss. But in what ways do you go above and beyond for your clients? How do you wow them?

15. Talking less and listening more.
When you listen, you learn. And as the adage goes, that’s why people have two ears and one mouth. When you take the time to really pay attention to what another person is saying, it can truly help not only you but your bottom line as well. When you listen, you are in a better position to help others.

16. Not giving up.
Don't give up when the going gets tough. Successful people hang in there. They pivot. They try something new. They persist. They may have to change their direction, but they keep moving forward.

17. Spending time with like-minded ones.
There's a saying that goes, “Show me who your friends are and I’ll show you who you are.” I believe that. People are only as successful as those they choose to surround themselves with. Good associations can help you more quickly achieve your goals.

18. Finding a mentor.
Many people who have had a mentor have attributed their success to that person. Mentors can help you achieve your goals faster and keep you accountable. They can share valuable experience that can cut your learning time in half.

19. Knowing your why.
When you know why you're doing something, you will get what you want quicker than if you don’t. Having a purpose is essential to being successful in business and in life. Why do you want to be successful? Why do you really want to be wealthy?

20. Not giving fear the upper hand.
Everyone has fears. Successful people don’t allow their fears to limit or define them. Fear inevitably keeps you in the same position and stunts your growth. Recognize your fears and seek ways to overcome them. Interview someone you admire and ask that person how he or she overcame a fear or pick up an autobiography and take notes.

21. Upgrading skills.
If you want to get ahead, there’s only one way to do it: Become better at something than you are today. What's the one thing you can focus on for the next 30 days that will catapult you to rock-star status in your industry? Focus your attention on that. I heard John Lee Dumas from Entrepreneur on Fire define "FOCUS" like this: Follow one course until success. Will you?

What I know for sure is that what gets tracked, gets done

Running out of patient, where is the Petroleum Minister?

The current spate of fuel scarcity, which started like a joke about three weeks ago, is about to hit the one month target with no apparent end in sight. If anything, petrol is getting scarcer by the day all over the country, with prices ranging from N150 to N500 per litre depending on the location around Nigeria.

Official sources blamed this on the activities of speculators, hoarders and saboteurs; a story we have always been told since fuel scarcity became a normal part of our lives from the early 1990’s.

Petrol dealers apparently sensed that the continued lowering of crude oil prices in the international market could lead to a drastic cut in the official price of petrol and thus decided to hoard the stock at hand. Things were not helped by the federal government’s delay in paying the N413 billion owed importers of the product.

President Muhammadu Buhari leaving Nigeria for Malta, on Thursday, November 26, 2015, to participate in the 2015 Common-wealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)

Though the federal government sent officials of the Directorate of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to indentify the hoarders and dispense their products free of charge to the public, this has proved incapable of easing off the scarcity because DPR can hardly do much in terms of coverage.

The effort of the federal government to get the National Assembly to approve the N465.5 billion supplementary to enable it pay the importers was a step taken only when the scarcity had started biting, a fallout of the generally slow and non-proactive attitude of this regime to governance in general.

We call on the National Assembly to jettison partisan nit-picking and approve the fund to enable Nigerians have a smooth Christmas and New Year season devoid of fuel scarcity and its attendant mass suffering and over-the roof personal spending on energy.

With the onset of the dry season and the sudden drop of electricity supply below 3,000 megawatts, Nigerians need easily available and affordable fuel to cope with the heat and conduct their businesses this end of year season.

Even as the subsidy fund is eagerly awaited, we call, once again, on the federal government to come forward with its holistic economic blueprint, especially as it affects efforts to ensure stability in the petroleum energy sector.

With President Muhammadu Buhari as the substantive Petroleum Resources Minister and Dr Ibe Kachikwu, a respected technocrat in the sector as the Minister of State, Nigerians are full of hopes that the perennial problems bedeviling the sector will be brought under control. We expect the so-called “cabals” in the sector be smashed and Nigerians freed from their stranglehold. We do not want this banality of business as usual.

The ongoing fuel scarcity is a personal burden for President Buhari. Nigerians are eagerly waiting for him to come forward with permanent solutions.

Why you are not successful despite your intelligence

When it comes to success, it’s easy to think that people blessed with brains are inevitably going to leave the rest of us in the dust. But new research from Stanford University will change your mind (and your attitude).

Psychologist Carol Dweck has spent her entire career studying attitude and performance, and her latest study shows that your attitude is a better predictor of your success than your IQ.

Dweck found that people’s core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you’re challenged because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed.

People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. They outperform those with a fixed mindset, even when they have a lower IQ, because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.

Common sense would suggest that having ability, like being smart, inspires confidence. It does, but only while the going is easy. The deciding factor in life is how you handle setbacks and challenges. People with a growth mindset welcome setbacks with open arms.

According to Dweck, success in life is all about how you deal with failure. She describes the approach to failure of people with the growth mindset this way,

“Failure is information—we label it failure, but it’s more like, ‘This didn’t work, and I’m a problem solver, so I’ll try something else.’”

Regardless of which side of the chart you fall on, you can make changes and develop a growth mindset. What follows are some strategies that will fine-tune your mindset and help you make certain it’s as growth oriented as possible.

Don’t stay helpless.

We all hit moments when we feel helpless. The test is how we react to that feeling. We can either learn from it and move forward or let it drag us down. There are countless successful people who would have never made it if they had succumbed to feelings of helplessness: Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas,” Oprah Winfrey was fired from her job as a TV anchor in Baltimore for being “too emotionally invested in her stories,” Henry Ford had two failed car companies prior to succeeding with Ford, and Steven Spielberg was rejected by USC’s Cinematic Arts School multiple times. Imagine what would have happened if any of these people had a fixed mindset. They would have succumbed to the rejection and given up hope. People with a growth mindset don’t feel helpless because they know that in order to be successful, you need to be willing to fail hard and then bounce right back.

Be passionate.

Empowered people pursue their passions relentlessly. There’s always going to be someone who’s more naturally talented than you are, but what you lack in talent, you can make up for in passion. Empowered people’s passion is what drives their unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Warren Buffet recommends finding your truest passions using, what he calls, the 5/25 technique: Write down the 25 things that you care about the most. Then, cross out the bottom 20. The remaining 5 are your true passions. Everything else is merely a distraction.

Take action.

It’s not that people with a growth mindset are able to overcome their fears because they are braver than the rest of us; it’s just that they know fear and anxiety are paralyzing emotions and that the best way to overcome this paralysis is to take action. People with a growth mindset are empowered, and empowered people know that there’s no such thing as a truly perfect moment to move forward. So why wait for one? Taking action turns all your worry and concern about failure into positive, focused energy.

Then go the extra mile (or two).

Empowered people give it their all, even on their worst days. They’re always pushing themselves to go the extra mile. One of Bruce Lee’s pupils ran three miles every day with him. One day, they were about to hit the three-mile mark when Bruce said, “Let’s do two more.” His pupil was tired and said, “I’ll die if I run two more.” Bruce’s response? “Then do it.” His pupil became so angry that he finished the full five miles. Exhausted and furious, he confronted Bruce about his comment, and Bruce explained it this way: “Quit and you might as well be dead. If you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there; you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

If you aren’t getting a little bit better each day, then you’re most likely getting a little worse—and what kind of life is that?

Expect results.

People with a growth mindset know that they’re going to fail from time to time, but they never let that keep them from expecting results. Expecting results keeps you motivated and feeds the cycle of empowerment. After all, if you don’t think you’re going to succeed, then why bother?

Be flexible.

Everyone encounters unanticipated adversity. People with an empowered, growth-oriented mindset embrace adversity as a means for improvement, as opposed to something that holds them back. When an unexpected situation challenges an empowered person, they flex until they get results.

Don't complain when things don't go your way.

Complaining is an obvious sign of a fixed mindset. A growth mindset looks for opportunity in everything, so there’s no room for complaints.

Bringing it all together

By keeping track of how you respond to the little things, you can work every day to keep yourself on the right side of the chart above.

How to Boost Traffic to Your Small-Business Website

What is better than one view on your website? More views! Have a website but the traffic numbers are lacking? Looking to drive traffic to your relevant and exciting content? Follow the tips below to gain a larger audience and leave a lasting impression while doing so.

Content is king.

With the search engine algorithm updates and the need for good content, it is no surprise how imperative great content is. Write for your audience, not robots. This will help build your brand AND improve your online visibility. Link for relevant content and keep the links to a minimum (3-5 links). Don’t forget linking to your own website and other pages – this is data-rich food for search engine crawlers. The added bonus is your users will have the content they need in a sensible way. This builds trust and credibility.

Social integration.

Social Media is the current landscape to connect with your audience. Chances are, your business is utilizing a multitude of social channels and engaging with your audience. Be sure to add a call-to-action on these social channels to get more information on your website. 140 characters to inspire and have your audience seek for more information. Use your social efforts to drive traffic to your site. Looking to gain more traffic on social media channels? Use it regularly and use #hashtags appropriately. Unfamiliar with #hashtag*?  The hashtag connects your message with the #topic or #cause so those seeking information can easily find it.

*Too many #hashtags can have the reverse outcome and users will see this as spam instead. Opt for 1-3 hashtags per message.

Multimedia = attention grabbing

Images and video capture the attention of your users and search engines alike. Multimedia increase visibility because all are inherently intrigued by visuals. Including an image/video on your press releases, blog posts, social media channels and website puts a bull's eye target for your users' line of vision. Simply put: multimedia gets noticed and being noticed is the first step in driving traffic to your website and brand. Take the next step and use the multimedia efforts within your social media strategy.

8 Money Mistakes to Avoid on Your Way to Being Wealthy

There is a difference between being rich and having wealth.

Wealth is the abundance of something in such surplus that no conditions can destroy it. Making a lot of money is one thing, getting rich another. Creating wealth, well, that’s what very few people ever learn. You have heard the expression "get rich quick," but you will never hear "get wealthy quick."

Ever hear the saying, “money never sleeps?” The wealthy take this literally and believe that money must work around the clock to grow. The wealthy respect and pay attention to their money knowing that nothing multiplies without attention. They also know money wants to be loved and acknowledged.

Sound crazy? Show me someone that doesn’t pay attention to their money or is disrespectful of it and I will show you someone lacking money.

The wealthy also avoid mistakes that big income earners and the rich make. Here are some common money mistakes you must avoid to create wealth:

1. Seeking comfort, not freedom. Comfort is the enemy of abundance and the most dangerous element of finances. The entire middle class is built on seeking comfort. The wealthy seek freedom and so much abundance that money is no longer dependent on their efforts. More is the mantra, abundance is the affirmation, comfort isn’t on their menu and freedom is the focus.

2. Diversification. You can never get truly wealthy by diversifying your investments. Wall Street has done a great job of selling the public on this idea of diversifying because it benefits Wall Street.

Mark Cuban says “Diversification is for idiots.” Andrew Carnegie said “put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket.”

If you want to create real wealth learn everything you can about a space and go all in.

3. Depending on one income flow. No matter how big your income is, never depend on one flow. I knew an executive who was earning $350,000 a year, the top 1 percent of all incomes. Suddenly the industry she worked in came to halt and her one income flow was shut down. This has happened to many Americans, destroying trillions of dollars of "pretended" wealth.

To create wealth, you must make investments that will create dependable streams of income flows, independent of your main source of income. I use rental income from apartments and partnerships in other companies to throw off passive flows of income. I continue to pay attention to each of these flows to make them stronger. This is not diversification -- it’s fortification of wealth.

4. Comparing to others. Seventy-six percent of working Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Comparing your finances to others will ensure you never create wealth. People often compare their situation to some starving nation in a remote part of the world to justify being "better off." Another person’s finances, good or bad, will not pay your bills, won’t fund your retirement and will not provide you peace of mind. Don’t compare your finances to someone else’s.

5. Investing in trends. Avoid investing in the latest and greatest technologies that can be displaced by new technological developments.

Warren Buffett invests in electricity, railroads, banks, insurance, soft drinks, food companies and candy.

Don't get on the roller coaster. Take the longer, slower ride that guarantees arrival.

6. Trusting without proof. The single biggest mistake of my financial life was naïvely trusting a group of people because I liked them and it felt right. I neglected to get proof that they were actually as they presented. Instead I went with my feelings and was deceived. By the time I figured out something was wrong, I was out millions.

Disregard your feelings when it comes to people and always look for solid evidence. If you are so close to people that you are not willing to ask them to provide evidence, make it a policy not to do business with them.

7. Saving to save. It is impossible to create real wealth just by saving money. The banks only pays .25 percent, so it will take you 40 years to grow your money 10 percent if rates stay where they are. More importantly, money that sits around idle always seems to find an emergency to fund.

Dave Ramsey suggests you not carry cash or credit cards because when either is available -- you’ll create a reason to use it.

To guarantee my wealth, since the age of 25, I moved surplus money into future investments accounts that I could not easily access, so that money was available for investments when I finally had the knowledge and courage to do so. This kept me broke and having to hustle constantly.

8. Pretender spender. On the other end of the spectrum is the pretender spender. They try to impress others with how they spend money. It’s not their money, it is always someone else’s. Sports cars, expensive clothes, designer bags, shoes, V.I.P. tables -- the list is endless.

The wealthy are not trying to impress anyone, they are seeking freedom.

When the wealthy hit affluence and abundance, they start throwing money around on ridiculous things -- cars, boats, planes, vacation homes. By then, it no longer matters that the things are poor investments. The very wealthy may appear to be flaunting their money with extravagances, but in reality they are not. The money they are spending is miniscule compared to the abundance they’ve created.

Sounds good doesn’t it? So what will it be for you: middle class, rich or wealthy?

You know money won’t make you happy and just getting by won’t either. There is a price to be paid for whatever choice you make. Wealth provides you with options and the person that has options has freedom.

How to Overcome 6 Obstacles Facing Every Online Marketer

The frenetic pace of change in the media landscape today is confronting marketers with challenges and setbacks they never faced before. With all of the moving parts associated with developing and implementing a solid market strategy, marketers are tasked with taming and managing a fierce, multi-headed beast.

Feeling lost and overwhelmed? Not to worry. Here are six common obstacles marketers face and tips on how to overcome them.

1. Advertising nobody sees.

According to programmatic advertising company Infectious Media, 54 percent of digital advertising goes unseen. Reasons why range from lack of plug-in support to ad-blocking browser extensions to miscellaneous loading problems. That means that more than half of the budget allocated to digital advertising is used ineffectively.

To combat this tough issue, buy advertising from companies that assure your ads will be seen. Millennial Mediaboasts a 100 percent viewability guarantee on its mobile ads, where your creatives are perfectly visible to audiences or else you do not pay for them. By prioritizing viewability, you can easily boost the effectiveness of your campaign.

2. Google’s changing SEO algorithm.

In May, Google quietly and unexpectedly changed its SEO algorithm and caused quite a stir in the marketing community. The move was made to favor mobile-friendly sites in search results to enhance the user experience. However, it also caused reduced traffic and revenue for most sites and required creative and timely solutions by companies to adapt to the change.

The fundamental way to make Google’s new SEO algorithm work for your company is to prioritize responsive web design with a mobile-friendly site. That  will  bump your site up to the top of the search results for all users, regardless of what device they are using. Always practice "white hat" SEO tactics focused on original, relevant and in-depth content to keep your audience delighted and coming back for more.

3. Ineffective consumer targeting.

Targeting is absolutely required for garnering a following and making sales. However, if performed incorrectly, your content won’t match up with the interests or needs of your audience, and there will be a disconnect between your brand and your prospective customers.

Before creating any content or nailing down your message, devote the time and effort to researching and constructing a detailed picture of your ideal buyer. One simple way to understand and flesh out what your best client would look like is to create buyer personas, which are fictional, generalized representations of your target customers. Each persona should fit distinct demographic categories, have unique needs and have fully-realized behavioral profiles. Knowing your audience will help you promote your content more effectively to those who will most likely be your loyal fans and evangelists.

4. Outdated technology and irrelevance.

If you don’t have your finger on the pulse of the newest developments in technology and social media, you have a high likelihood of driving your brand into irrelevance. The good news is, it is easier than ever to keep track of what is new and effective. Resources likeHubSpot and Moz provide in-depth, digestible articles and guides that will help you understand the ins and outs of marketing as well as how to incorporate the best value-adding techniques into your marketing strategy.

5. Poor email growth.

Growing your email list growth should be your top priority. According toLitmus, email marketing drives 20x more ROI than banner ads. The ability  to contact your customers directly is a hugely underestimated asset, especially since email has a higher conversion rate than Facebook and Twitter. Poor or stunted email growth is detrimental to your marketing efforts.

Thankfully, there are several tactics you can use to quickly expand your email list. First, only offer quality content. If you pique your readers’ interest with unique articles, blog posts and white papers, they will be eager to sign up for your newsletter. Services such as SumoMe’s List Builder also help seamlessly convert website visitors into loyal email subscribers. For more tips on how to grow your email list, readBuffer’s first-hand account of how it doubled its email signups in just one month.

6. Lack of video and visual skills.

When we think of marketers, we tend to imagine folks who are great at writing and communication and who also have a knack for networking and strategy-building. But the truth is, visual consumption is not just a fad, and marketers need to gain the skills necessary to thrive in this new world of infographics, gifs and Vines.

Brush up on your favorite image and video editing software, or take classes for the first time on Lynda.com. Then, observe how other brands are utilizing high-quality images and videos on their websites and social media. Later, incorporate lessons learned into your marketing materials.

4 Ways to Become an Expert

Expertise is one of those things that is both rare and a highly valued commodity -- a fact belied by the frequency in which it appears on resumes -- but made clear by the way it is sought out by everyone, from potential employers, to partners and customers. We all understand that expertise is important, but many have a more difficult time of figuring out the right way to gain it.

The pursuit of a degree can certainly help you develop but doesn’t exactly require you to get your hands dirty in a way that allows you to learn practical skills. Working your way up the ladder at an established company also has major benefits, but it often takes time to get the responsibility you need to be able to gain the expertise you’re looking, which can be counterproductive to your effort. Don’t get me wrong -- experience is certainly an excellent way to gain knowledge, but its correlation with expertise is not causal.

Another, and arguably more successful, way to becoming an expert in something is to just strike out on your own and teach yourself. One of the biggest misconceptions about starting a business is that the expertise in running a business is a precondition to creating one. You can always learn from and rely on others, but at the end of the day, there is exponentially more to be learned from doing something yourself.

Here are a few tips in gaining expertise:

1. Don’t trust your instincts.

You may be asking yourself, “What? That’s the exact opposite of what everyone’s ever told me!” Yes, a well-known mantra is to trust your instincts, but the harsh reality is that even the most well-intentioned instincts are often wrong. The key to driving your business forward and developing your skills is to better understand how you make decisions, so you are more capable of knowing when your gut is leading you in the right direction -- and when you may need a second opinion.

We've all been through the process of watching a brilliant idea fail miserably, and while this has its own long-term benefits, it is easier to avoid it entirely. Learning your own cognitive pre-dispositions, whether it be an over-reliance on a specific tool or a risk-tolerance that is far too high, can help you avoid critical errors and grow your business faster.

2. Embrace your ignorance.

Experience can help you identify problems and opportunities in advance, but it can also blind you to other problems and opportunities. Coming in with fresh eyes allows you to establish your own unique perspective and expertise in order to see things that your competition or would-be mentors might not. The sometimes overwhelming desire for the sense of security provided by credible experts can come at the expense of creative growth.

Very often, the most disruptive solution for a specific industry is hidden by best practices that make that option much less exciting or visible. We can argue whether ignorance is actually bliss, but it is fairly obvious that you can't be afraid of what you don't know. Sometimes this lack of knowledge can lead you astray, but it can also be a prerequisite for identifying a new road to success. Being aware of inexperience is important, but embracing the uncorrupted perspective it affords can be a game-changer.

3. Learn from your partners.

Whether it be a food supplier for a restaurant or an advertiser on your website, understanding the needs and viewpoints of all parts of your supply chain and sales funnel can be incredibly helpful. Keeping an eye on what’s important to each player in your business gives you a more holistic view of your business and can help you realize critical insights much more rapidly. Equally, it will keep your finger on the pulse and help you stay ahead of market changes.

4. Ignore the stigma of failure.

There are few lessons as powerful or lasting as failing miserably to accomplish a goal. We’re always told to avoid failure, which is why, when it occurs, it can be so devastating. While I certainly would not recommend seeking it out, if failure does happen to come your way, embrace it and use it as an opportunity to learn for the future.

Taking a step back after a setback and properly analyzing what led to it can be an important and liberating process. Undertaking a thorough debrief can help you gather insights into your decision-making process and the way you operate your business. In the best case, it can help you clearly identify areas to change, allowing you to move forward all the stronger.

Most importantly, you will learn rather quickly that while failing may be a gut-wrenching experience, it is hardly the end of the world. Much of succeeding in business is about taking risks, and fearing failure may be important -- but knowing that it is a temporary frustration can empower you to take the risks necessary to achieve true success.

Acquiring expertise will allow you to sit in the driver’s seat of your business and learn and grow as you build your business. But as critical as it is to recognize the importance of expertise, it is more important to have an actionable plan to acquire it. Degrees and experience are great, but sometimes the best way to become an expert is to start learning on your own, testing out ideas and adopting insights you gain into your future endeavors. By keeping these tips in mind, you can make the most of your entrepreneurial pursuits to create the foundation for long-term success.

The 3 Habits Productive People Find Time for Every Day

It's funny, really. Most of us who get into entrepreneurship start with the intention of working LESS than we did at our regular jobs. The startling reality is that we often end up doing way more because we love the projects we're involved with. And because oftentimes, that's what it takes to make things happen.

Still, the long hours can take their toll — and even the Elon Musks of the world are no exception.

To keep yourself productive, it's essential that you build build habits to help you organize your day and get the most out of your time.

Here are three of the most powerful.

1. Become an early riser by going to bed early.

There was probably a period of time in your life where it was easy stay up late into the night (or early into the next morning) trying to get things done.

For me, however, that period was over a long time ago. Recently, I’ve come to realize that all eight-hour periods just aren’t created equally.

Going to bed at 10 pm and waking up around 6 am is EXPONENTIALLY better than going to bed at 3 am and waking up around 11 am, even though number of hours you sleep is the same. I’ve tested this over and over again, and the evidence is pretty clear: I don’t perform well if I stay up past 11 pm-ish.

Early risers really do have a distinct advantage when it comes to mental clarity, acuity and energy.

Simply put: waking up early works better than any other strategy for becoming more productive. But you have to make sure you get enough sleep to back it up. So get to bed!

I’ve had to give myself a bedtime and be my own parent by ruthlessly enforcing it. It was harder than it sounds, because I’ve been programmed to stay up late for so many years.

2. Start every day with an intention, focus or meditation.

Starting your day with  a clear idea of what you want to do changes EVERYTHING.

Have you ever had a day where as soon as you woke up, there were already missed calls, text messages and emails screaming for your attention? You felt like you were struggling to stay afloat before breakfast. Oh, that sounds like every day, you say? That needs so stop.

If you like, you can meditate. You know, cross-legged, a candle, with some nice music playing in your ridiculously expensive Beats headphones. But if that's too much, you can just "take 10."

Take 10 slow breaths, think about your main objectives for the day, then get moving. This seems too simple to have an effect, but it’s not. If you’re used to getting up already in battle mode, then you’ve probably forgotten how it feels to have a moment to yourself.

Take a few of those minutes back to refocus yourself. It really helps. You can also use that time to create a better to-do list.

3. Physical activity. Do it.

Working out is probably the highest-leverage tool in your arsenal. It predictably and reliable makes you feel  better and keeps you both physically and emotionally healthy, year round.

To have the mental energy to take on the full calendar of to-do’s that people want from you, you have to be in the gym.
Training yourself physically not only gives you benchmarks to hit on a regular basis, but it also creates a predictable backbone in your daily life that you can count on, even if everything goes wrong. Mentally, that’s very comforting.

Trust me, I know that integrating these habits into your life won't be easy at first. But if you're not healthy, your business can't thrive anyway. Consider them a long-term investment in your business.

End of Cyber and ATM crime as MasterCard prepare to launch facial recognition payment service

The Electronic Payment Providers Association of Nigeria (E-PPAN) said that MasterCard would soon launch a facial recognition payment service to tackle the risk of increasing cybercrimes.

Mrs Onajite Regha, the Chief Executive Officer of E-PPAN, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Regha said that the development was part of the company’s vision to discontinue with the use of password for online payments.

“MasterCard’s facial recognition will roll out to only about 500 users at first, with major hardware and software companies like Apple,

Microsoft and others along with two banks already on board the venture.

“Through this system, your phone can tell the difference between your unique face and that of your siblings,’’ she said.

Regha, who is also the Executive Secretary of E-PPAN, said that the Automated Teller Machine (ATMs) based on biometrics had been the subject of discussion for years.

She said that China had unveiled the world first facial recognition ATM, which would not allow users to withdraw cash, unless their faces match their identification.

The E-PPAN officer said the machine had inbuilt camera which captures the facial features of the users compared with a database of identification photos.

According to her, the machine can also identify people if their facial features changes.

Regha also said that the machine would help the police to crackdown on a range of financial crimes.

She said that it would prevent thieves from accessing other peoples’ accounts.

“The ATM records the serial number of every bank note deposited and any client who deposited fake money can be identified.

“It is 20 per cent more accurate at verifying the authenticity of multiple currencies compared to the average ATM being used globally,’’ Regha said

SEARCHING FOR A WIFE? Must Read please

My son, I will be very raw and sincere with you.
Do not worry about the size of a woman buttock
or breast but worry about the size of her heart
and brain. Worry about the size of her love and
endurance. Because after 5 or 10 years, it will not
be about the breast or buttock.
As you can see, your mum now has a flat chest
and almost flat buttock but we still live together
happily, I still love her and she still love me.
Be careful of a woman that loves money. I mean
the woman that talks ‘every time’ about her hair,
cloths, shoes, bags panties and make-ups.
Marriage is not all about these things. Without
make-up, cloths, shoes and panties a good
marriage will still stand but without love, no
marriage can stand.
When I got married to your mum, I didn’t have a
car or house of my own. I was not even
educated. But I had dreams and she appreciate
and support me. Any woman that does not
support your dream is not worth thinking-a-
minute about. There are women that will see your
dreams better than you, you are lucky if you find
one,
My son, open your ears very well, there is a kind
of woman you should avoid, do not make a
mistake to marry this kind of woman or you will
regret it. I mean a woman that always has bad
things to say about everyone. If you see this kind
of woman, run away.
One of the worst kind of woman you can marry is
the one that complains about everything. If you
buy this, she says you should have bought that, if
you do this, she said you should have done that.
Please stay away!
Most women enjoy talking but the one who talks
for two hours and listen for two minutes is a
potential ‘bomb’. Be wise
Be very careful of a pretending partner. A
pretending woman is not hard to know. She will
always know everything about everything, she will
be careful. Just close your eyes and open your
heart and you will see!
No woman is perfect. If you see a woman who
believes in your dream , who respects you who is
committed and who is not all about herself alone
then don’t let her go.
But remember, you must not be a wayward man.
I have trained you!
If you find a good woman but you are a bad man,
you wont have a good marriage!
I won’t pick a wife for you but I have given you
my advice. When you find her, bring her for my
blessings.
May you find a woman that will increase you not
decrease you..

When Setbacks Happen, Ask This Question

Setbacks happen to all of us. For me, it was the death of my daughter few years back. For another, it was a full-blown business meltdown.

These setbacks smack us down and make a sham of our best-laid plans. They humble us, derail us, and dispirit us. And sometimes they inspire us.

In his 2005 Stanford commencement speech, Steve Jobs said that his being fired from Apple was the best thing that ever happened to him. "It freed me to enter into one of the most creative periods of my life," he said.

Like Jobs, many leaders view their greatest setbacks as seminal moments in their lives and careers. What makes the difference for them? How can we use our setbacks to inspire us rather than drag us down?

In my executive coaching practice, I’ve found that there’s one magical question that can help people make the most of these situations: What can you create from this?

This question is effective because it returns agency to you. When bad things happen, it’s easy to feel like a victim. Circumstances can feel out of control, and many of them actually are. But asking this question forces you to accept whatever has happened and to shift your mentality towards harnessing it in a constructive manner. While this is empowering, it may take a long time before you’re ready to ask what you can create from it.

I don’t want to sugarcoat this. So rather than immediately asking this question, I recommend looking at a four-step process. For minor setbacks this process may be fast, for major ones it may be long -- there's no "right" timeline.

1. Accept whatever has happened.

The first step is to accept whatever has happened. Acceptance may seem as simple as saying "well that happened," but often we need to go through other phases to get there. It may look a bit like the Kubler-Ross stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally, acceptance.

2. Give yourself time and space to recover.

When Steve Jobs got fired, he admitted that he "really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down, that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me."

Like Jobs, most of us need time to process our setbacks and “land” from them before we can think about creating from them. Stuffing your emotions may seem helpful in the short run, but it will ultimately hold you back. Instead, be compassionate with yourself and allow yourself space to heal or grieve. Go through it, not around it. Acceptance and recovery takes time.

3. Get in the right frame of mind.

As you recover, now is a good time to start rejuvenating yourself physically, emotionally and spiritually. Take small steps that help you get into the right frame of mind. Go to yoga or kickboxing class. Pray. Read a new book. Don’t worry so much about the future; just do what you need to do to regain your positive energy.

4. Ask the question.

Once you’ve taken the above steps and are feeling a strong sense of self again, now is the time to ask the magic question: What can I create from this? Try brainstorming all of the different ways your setback could become the best thing that ever happened to you. It may be hard at first, but eventually you will turn a corner start begin brimming with possibility.

After grieving the death of my brother, I eventually asked myself this question. At first I felt guilty and a little selfish about using such a tragedy to propel my life. But the process of asking "What can I create from this?" led me to decide, at long last, that I want to create a family. And I suspect my brother would’ve appreciated that.

FG bans importation of ‘I pass my neighbour’ generators

The Federal Government has banned the importation of small generators popularly called 'I pass my neighbour,' used by low-income Nigerians.

Controller, Federation Operations Unit Zone A, Lagos of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Madugu Sanni Jubrin, disclosed this in Lagos while speaking with newsmen.

Sanni also said that the command seized 4,733 goods worth N52 million and arrested some suspected smugglers since he assumed duties one week ago.

He said the seizures were made possible through intelligence gathering and other measures put in place by the unit with a view to ensuring that the supply chains of smugglers were fully blocked.

Conducting journalists round the seized items which included 239 bales of used clothing valued at N10 million, 1,120 cartons units of the small generators valued at N13.4 million, among others, Madugu said the unit would not relent in its efforts in ensuring that prohibited items are impounded and those involved in its importation prosecuted.

“The smaller generators have been banned by the Federal Government because it is causing air pollution and destruction of our lungs and breathing system. That is why they have banned it but people are still interested in smuggling them in, that is why we intercepted them.

“If you go to the market, you still see them because people have imported them before the ban. So it is the leftover they had before the ban that they are selling because the law did not backdate the ban and it is not an absolute prohibition.

“It is prohibition by trade which means you cannot bring it in large quantity and sell to the public. That is the type of prohibition we have on this but if you buy one piece, Customs will not seize it.

“We will not relent in our efforts. When we see any prohibited item, we will seize, arrest the people and we will allow the law court to take decision on prosecuting them. So it is better for them to stop smuggling than to continue when they know Customs will catch up with them,” he said.

5 Ways Leaders Suffocate Their Organizations

Some 90 percent of startups will not see the light of day, and by “light” I’m referring to profit. The reasoning for why failure prevails ranges from a lack of capital, poor marketing, ineffective product development or the inability to meet demand. But if we were to trace the cause of each, we would likely end up at the same source: leadership.

Leadership is both the problem and solution to the challenges businesses face today. However, it’s not just organizational leadership that’s the culprit. Leaders exists at all levels of the company, from the new hire up to the CEO, and the habits or behaviors they exhibit and expect in others can be either strongly supportive or terribly toxic. Here are five ways leaders can suffocate their organizations:

1. They want something from nothing.

There are three decision-making criteriathat drive a senior leader’s decisions: time, resources and requirements. If one of these elements is lacking, this entails doing more with less -- spreading the workforce too thin. Doing so may work in the short-term, but if you don’t want your company to be another stat on the Gallup employee engagement survey, don’t add unnecessary pressure to an already frenetic work pace.

2. They expect too much, too soon.

One of the fastest ways to burn people out is to add another layer of time to an already pressing deadline. Throwing someone into the fire of uncertainty with little or no guidance is one thing, doing so against a ticking clock is another story. The pressure of time has a way of adding undo stress to one’s already-stressful life, and expecting too much too soon doesn’t help.

The solution: take the time to get clear on expectations. Don’t be afraid to say “No” when demand outweighs the ability to meet it.

3. They speak one language.

I'm not referring to language in terms of ethnicity or culture, but in terms of numbers. Leaders who ignore qualitative improvements live in a false reality. Yes, data and information are important because they feed higher level decisions. However, so does the “soft stuff” of trusting and communicating. It’s not easy assigning a value to the trust that exists between employees, but remove it and you’ll quickly see how valuable it was.

4. They reward conformism.

Just because that employee was a stellar manager doesn’t mean he or she will be a great leader, and making the jump from tactical to strategic mindset doesn’t come naturally for everyone. Promotions should (ideally) be based off merit rather than previous experience, politicking or subject-matter expertise. If you’re looking to promote someone, stick with what we all learned in school: the 5Ws and H.

Who is being promoted? Why is this person being promoted? What are we promoting, the person or the skill? When is the opportune time to promote this person? What will be the obstacles to his or her success? How can we help him or her bridge the gap from manager to leader?

5. They don’t communicate.

Communication is at the heart of getting results, and how leaders show up is everything. The verbal and non-verbal messages you send all add up to yourpersonal leadership “brand” that either attracts followers like bees to honey or repels them like the plague. There are a number of ways leaders can effectively communicate with their employees, such as holding town halls, taking a different route through the office to increase visibility or setting weekly one-on-ones just to check in.

The hardest part about leading effectively is being aware of any suffocating practices. Self-awareness serves as the antibody for this, helping to re-align any derailing behavior and get results back on track. How do you do this? See number five above

So Fast! Minister for Work and Power, Raji Fashola commences works immediately

Babatunde Fashola, former Lagos state governor serves now as Minister of Power, Works and Housing.

He is a man acknowledged with producing results even in the most hard situations and this mostly accounted for his nomination as minister of critical sectors that will shape the success or otherwise of the Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

When some of the recently sworn-in ministers have postponed the beginning of the work till November 17, Fashola, who is aware of the big task ahead, has hit the ground running.

You may see how the new minister settling down to work at his new office in Abuja.

Diezani richer than Dangote? Can this be true?

I start to imagine what a normal human being would ever need 13 Billion British Pounds for in this limited world.I start to wonder too if former President could imagine that only one out of his ex-Ministers could amass such a stupendous amount under him without him knowing this. Wonders shall never end. I even saw a post on CNN that the former Minister has made a refund of $90B already, how much is Dangote worth? As at today Dangote is worth $14.7B and the 67th in the world while Bill Gates is still the number 1 with $ 79.2 on the Forbes list. Diezani is simply a wonder. Old pensioners are dying of hunger daily, workers are no longer getting their salaries as at when due, Governments can no longer build infrastructures, road all over the country are in complete bad shape and only one woman got away with this kind of money. Nigeria is a wonder, Diezani is a wonder.

Paris Attacks Kill More Than 100, Police Say; Border Controls Tightened

PARIS — The Paris area reeled Friday night from a shooting rampage, explosions and mass hostage-taking that PresidentFrançois Hollande called an unprecedented terrorist attack on France. His government announced sharply increased border controls and heightened police powers as it mobilized the military in a national emergency.

French television and news services quoted the police as saying that around 100 people had been killed at a concert site where hostages had been held during a two-hour standoff with the police, and that perhaps dozens of others had been killed in apparently coordinated attacks outside the country’s main sports stadium and four other popular locations in the city. But estimates on the total number of dead varied.

Witnesses on French television said the scene at the concert hall, which can seat as many as 1,500 people, was a massacre, describing how gunmen with automatic weapons shot bursts of bullets into the crowd.

Ambulances were seen racing back and forth in the area into the early hours of Saturday, and hundreds of survivors were evacuated in police buses. French television said Paris hospitals were overwhelmed with wounded.

HOW TO BE HAPPY ALWAYS IN LIFE.

READ THIS
AWESOME LIFE TIPS.
.
1. Always remember that there is nobody on this earth that does not have problems. You are not the only one that has problems.
.
2. Challenges should be expected in life. It is only a dead man that has no challenges.
.
3. There is no problem that has no solution. There are solutions to the pains you are passing through.
.
4. The way you picture yourself in your mind can affect your happiness. Picture yourself as a valuable and beautiful person. Avoid low self esteem and inferiority complex.
.
5. Do not mind about what people say about you. Some people are sadists. They can just say somethings just to make you feel sad.
.
6. Make friends with reasonable people who make you happy. Do not make friends with people who make jest of you or laugh at you over your challenges.
.
7. At your leisure time, keep yourself busy with your favorite hobbies like sports, games, watching movies, surfing the internet, playing computer games, etc.
.
8. Do not allow anyone to intimidate you with money and material things. A poor man today can become rich tomorrow. Change is constant.
.
9. No matter what you are passing through today, do not give up. As long as there is life, there is hope.
.
10. Be very prayerful. Pray without ceasing. Prayer is a catalyst that can speed up your blessings to come to you on time.
.
11. Be courageous to go for what you want. Life is all about risk. If you don't take a risk, you will not get the desires of your heart.
HAVE A NICE LIFE.

5 Ways to Strengthen Your Bond With Your Team

Having a happy, healthy, engaged workforce goes far beyond providing free food, gym memberships and a ping-pong table. While those perks are sure to be appreciated by employees, they don’t do much in the way of motivating or retaining them. What itreally comes down to is the employee-employer relationship.

New data released earlier this year by Virgin Pulse revealed exactly what employees need to love their job -- and a large part of that is a good relationship with their employer. In fact, nearly 60 percent of the more than 1,000 full-time employees surveyed said their relationship with their employer positively impacts their focus or productivity at work, and 44 percent said it positively impacts their stress levels.

Considering nearly 50 percent of the 7,200 adults surveyed in a recent Gallup study left a job “to get away from their manager,” it’s time to reevaluate the employee-employer relationship.

Here is what makes for a good relationship between employers and their employees.

1. Open communication.

The key to any good relationship is communication that goes both ways. Unfortunately, employees don’t feel like their bosses are really listening. Arecent survey of more than 1,000 U.S. employees by 15Five showed a mere 15 percent of employees are satisfied with the quality of workplace communication.

What’s more, that same study found that 81 percent of employees would rather join a company that values “open communication” than one that offers great perks.

To create a work environment that supports open communication, consider implementing a web-based feedback platform. According to the survey by 15Five, 70 percent of employees said they’d be more likely to share information with managers if they could enter comments into an online feedback system.

2. Guidance and support.

A leader can’t lead without providing direction. To build a stronger relationship with employees, employers must provide them with the necessary guidance and support to achieve their work goals. Employers need to have an idea of what those goals are to do that.

Yet, the aforementioned Gallup study showed that only 12 percent of employees “strongly agree” that their manager helps them set work priorities, and only 13 percent agree that their manager helps them set performance goals.

Give employees the help they need. Meet with them regularly to discuss their goals for the quarter and set priorities. This will better align them with the goals of the company.

3. Opportunities and investments.

Ideally, both parties bring something to, and get something out of, the relationship. For employers, the benefits of a good employee-employer relationship include a workforce that is highly engaged, productive and satisfied in their role within the organization. An effective and efficient workforce is good for business.

For employees, the advantages of the relationship should go beyond the paycheck and benefits package to include individualized training.

Send employees to professional development events or invite leaders within the industry to speak during a monthly lunch-and-learn. Just be sure to provide them with opportunities to grow and improve. After all, investing in employees ensures they’ll invest in the company.

4. Gratitude and appreciation.

It’s in our nature to want to be praised for a job well done -- a result of receiving “gold stars” during our schoolyard days, no doubt. It reassures, motivates and gives us the fuel we need to continue doing what we do well.

In fact, Globoforce and SHRM’s 2015 Employee Recognition Report showed 86 percent of the 823 HR professionals surveyed said values-based recognition increased employee happiness at work, so don’t hold back on the “thank you” notes and pats. Employees will appreciate the recognition, and the employee-employer relationship will get a much-needed boost.

5. Interest in life outside of work.

The employee-employer relationship should be professional, but that doesn’t mean employers shouldn’t take the time to get to know the person behind the work. Strive to treat employees as people, not just worker bees. The key is to take an interest in employees’ lives outside of work.

What are employees’ personal and professional goals? Where do they hope to be in five years? Do they have a family? What do they like to do once the workday is over?

Questions like these help employers to know their employees on a more personal level. That helps them make sense of individual employee actions and preferences, and forms a much stronger bond between employers and their employees.

7 Ways to Create an Inspired Team

Business leaders understand that employees are the greatest asset their company has, making attitude the greatest determinant of success. Wise business leaders focus on what is “right” in their company and in their employees. Using intimidation and uncertainty to spurn productivity yields limited, temporary results. That type of coercive motivational approach is totally counterproductive in the long term.  A workplace imbued with a positive mindset has the greatest potential. The enhanced psychological well-being of its employees greatly enhances their achievement and performance outcomes.

1. Recognition of effort.

Employees are motivated by many different things but common to all is the desire for recognition and praise. You will naturally seek out and pay attention to the positives in your employees when you make a commitment to express thankfulness in the work environment. You become attuned to their hard work and their many accomplishments.

Positivity, like negativity, is contagious and should begin with managers, supervisors etc.  Leaders who make it their habit to send out one email per day recognizing an employee’s contribution increase that person’s morale enormously. The executive who starts meetings by focusing on the positive strides accomplished to date will find that meetings naturally take on a positive vibe and a motivated tone.

Team members who feel acknowledged and appreciated are truly satisfied in their work.

2. Build upon strengths.

Study your employees diligently. Observe and comment on their strengths to positively push them to their fullest potential. When you see a specific strength in someone, you will quickly know their optimum position and role on your team. Use this knowledge to refine and expand them. Assign each member a defined purpose on the team that they accept, understand, embrace and feel good about.

Being acknowledged as valuable in one’s role is a great motivational trigger inspiring hard work and self-confidence.

3. Balance negatives.

Human beings tend to dwell on negativity. Negative thoughts are bigger than positive thoughts and are processed by a different part of the brain. Negative thoughts take longer to break down. Managers can easily get stuck focusing on what hasn’t been achieved and what employees are not doing, leading to negative feedback that undermines those who work for you.

Build your emotional resilience while you are in the midst of stress or disappointment by refocusing your perception on what successes have been achieved by your team. Focus your team on their potential to overcome the current stressor or disappointment.

In lieu of criticizing and creating another setback, inspire a comeback.

4.  Encourage adaptability.

When your team is taking on a new challenge brainstorm with them to explore potential obstacles and alternative routes to effectively bypass them. When mapping out new territory the smartest thing you can do is hear what each employee’s predicted solution would be to perceived pitfalls. This thinking spawns creativity. Ideas start to flow between team members, creating cohesion, excitement and innovative ways to strategize. Brainstorming exercises build feelings of hopefulness within the team as they prepare to face possible unexpected turns of events -- a common occurrence in business.

With open minds, strategies become increasingly adaptable and success is nearly guaranteed.

5. Focus on today’s success.

It can be demotivating when leaders focus only on the bigger picture and how far the team is from reaching the company’s loftiest goals. The perception amongst employees is one of lack and how far off they are from achieving what needs to be done. To keep the team positive, identify and reward achievement of the incremental goals that bring the team closer and closer to the end result. This approach shifts the team mindset to “we're closer ” rather than “we're not close enough.” That increases energy, positivity, willingness, commitment and focus.

Little rewards are necessary along the way to keep the purpose of the bigger picture alive.

6. Support your employees.

Inspire your employees by communicating your confidence in their abilities to do what needs to be done to succeed. Only talk in terms of success, rather than threatening failure. Your team must see you have the deep confidence in them they crave and deserve. When you have doubts about your team communicate in a way that ensures their success. Offer feedback, rather than criticism. Do what needs to be done on your end, as their leader, to set your individual team members up for success.

7. Keep promises.

Creating a positive work environment is accomplished through reward, acknowledgement, group and individual recognition, but most importantly through trust. If you tell the team or an individual person their hard work will be rewarded, either with bonuses, tickets to a game, a show or through some other form of reward, you must follow through. Not keeping a promise will lower individual and team morale.

Walk your talk and follow through on all promised rewards for work effort and goals achieved.

Positive work environments drive productivity, efficiency and the overall success of team members and the business. It is important for leaders to attend trainings on how to lead from a positive mindset. Increasing the psychological capital of the workplace is a matter of leading one step at a time. Set small, positive goals each week with the team members. The benefits of little these acknowledgments make a huge difference in overall morale.

By creating an environment your employees look forward to thriving in, work becomes a place where they see themselves as successful, productive and appreciated for their hard-earned efforts. Happier employees are more productive, efficient and creative. Many people hold the belief that it is the external appearances of an individual’s career such as their job title, a promotion or salary which bring satisfaction, but for happiness to be truly experienced in a person’s career the work environment must first be a positive place. In this way, as you increase the emotional capital of your employees you increase the company’s financial capital and ultimate success.
